Santana Melchor - Old KEWA Pueblo Pottery
Santana Melchor (1889-1978) was revered as one of the finest potters from Kewa Pueblo (Santo Domingo) during the early and mid-20th century. Renowned for her exceptional large storage jars, Santana’s work was distinguished by her use of traditional designs, which she meticulously preserved and promoted throughout her career. Her dedication to maintaining these artistic traditions played a crucial role in keeping the cultural heritage of Kewa Pueblo pottery alive.
Santana Melchor was a daughter of Maria Garcia and the mother noted potter Crucita Melchor and Dolorita Melchor. She learned to make pottery from her mother, Maria Garcia. Throughout most of the 1900’s she was one of the most influential Santo Domingo potters. In 1974 she was part of the delegation of Pueblo potters who visited the White House as a guest of first lady Pat Nixon.
Santana Melchor’s legacy continues through her children, Crucita Melchor, Ray Melchor, and Dolorita Melchor, who have also contributed to the rich tradition of Kewa Pueblo pottery.
